In his fifth solo exhibition with Galerie Guido W. Baudach, entitled Unclosure, Philipp Modersohn presents a new multifaceted installation in situ. Starting point is the examination of structures of demarcation and division that can lead to isolation. Possibilities for emancipation from these structures are explored using various everyday objects: a stone that cannot be categorised, a monitor that no longer displays anything and instead reveals its materiality made visible by heating, a room that opens up to an undefined weather event, ...
Parallel to the exhibition, the first comprehensive publication on Modersohn‘s artistic practice, entitled Attitudes of Stone, is being released by Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite publishers, Berlin, edited by Wilma Lukatsch and the Kunstverein Oldenburg. The book contains short poetic and theoretical contributions by authors from various professions, pseudo-scientific diagrams, and an overview of the artist‘s previous site-specific installations and other works – creating a horizontal dialogue with collaborators as well as with the objects and processes themselves.
Philipp Modersohn, born 1986 in Bremen, lives and works in Berlin. He studied philosophy at the University of Potsdam as well as fine arts at the UdK Berlin and the Columbia University New York. In his multidisciplinary practice, Modersohn emphasizes the vibrancy of all terrestrial matter. In his films and videos, created using various animation techniques, he preferably features diverse non-human, often inorganic actors – stones, shells, peat chunks, etc. – who recount their respective existence. In his sculptures, which consist mainly of sediments and other originally earthbound materials such as sand, glass, concrete or plastics, Modersohn highlights the procedural and experimental aspect of art as well as the beauty of imperfection. Thereby, he draws on the decisive formative forces of planet Earth: pressure and heat. The results oscillate between interior and exterior objects and often have a concrete architectural or design reference. Philipp Modersohn is represented in private and public collections and has participated in several institutional exhibitions, including at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn (2022), the Kunstverein Göttingen (2020), and the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2018). His works are currently on display in the exhibition Notes on Becoming at the Oldenburger Kunstverein.

In seiner fünften Einzelausstellung mit der Galerie Guido W. Baudach zeigt Philipp Modersohn unter dem Titel Unclosure eine neue vielgestaltige Installation in situ. Ausgangspunkt ist die Auseinandersetzung mit Strukturen der Abgrenzung und Einteilung, die zu Vereinzelung führen können. Dabei werden anhand verschiedener Alltagsgegenstände Möglichkeiten zur Emanzipation von diesen Strukturen untersucht: Wir begegnen einem Stein, der sich nicht kategorisieren lässt, einem Monitor, der nichts mehr ausstrahlt und stattdessen seine durch Erhitzung sichtbar gewordene Materialität offenbart, einem Raum, der sich zu einem nicht näher definierten Wetterereignis hin öffnet, ...
Parallel zur Ausstellung erscheint unter dem Titel Attitudes of Stone die erste umfassende Publikation zu Modersohns künstlerischen Praxis im Verlag Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite, Berlin, herausgegeben von Wilma Lukatsch und dem Oldenburger Kunstverein. Das Buch enthält kurze poetische und theoretische Beiträge von AutorInnen verschiedener Professionen, pseudowissenschaftliche Diagramme sowie eine Übersicht bisheriger ortspezifischer Installationen und anderer Arbeiten des Künstlers – ein horizontaler Dialog mit KollaborateurInnen sowie den Dingen und Prozessen selbst entsteht.
Philipp Modersohn, geboren 1986 in Bremen, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er hat an der Universität Potsdam Philosophie sowie an der UdK Berlin und der Columbia Universität New York Freie Kunst studiert. In seiner multidisziplinären Praxis hebt Modersohn die Lebendigkeit aller irdischen Materie hervor. So lässt er in seinen mit diversen Animationstechniken erstellten Filmen und Videos vorzugsweise nicht-menschliche, oft anorganische Akteure – Steine, Muscheln, Torfstücke etc. – auftreten und von ihrer jeweiligen Existenz berichten. In seinen Skulpturen, die häuptsächlich aus Sedimenten und anderen ursprünglich erdgebundenen Materialien wie Sand, Glas, Beton oder Kunststoff bestehen, betont Modersohn den prozessualen und experimentellen Aspekt von Kunst sowie die Schönheit des Unvollkommenen. Dabei greift er auf die entscheidenden formgebenden Kräfte unseres Erdplaneten zurück: Druck und Hitze. Die Resultate oszillieren zwischen Innen- und Außenobjekten und weisen nicht selten einen konkreten Architektur- oder Design-Bezug auf. Philipp Modersohn ist in privaten wie öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten und hat an verschiedenen institutionellen Ausstellungen teilgenommen, u.a. in der Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn (2022), im Kunstverein Göttingen (2020), der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2018). Aktuell sind Arbeiten von ihm in der Ausstellung Notes on Becoming im Oldenburger Kunstverein zu sehen.
