On the occasion of Gallery Weekend Berlin 2023, Galerie Guido W. Baudach is pleased to present its eighth solo exhibition with Björn Dahlem. Under the title Something Secret about the Universe (I always wanted to tell you), the artist, who lives in Potsdam, is showing a spatial installation in situ in which various new sculptures are embedded.
Björn Dahlem has been exploring the connection between aesthetic imagery and scientific world views in his works since the late 1990s. His installations, sculptures and objects are mostly made of simple materials that he transforms into precisely composed and visibly handmade forms incorporating selected objets trouvés. The structural complexity of the works is derived from the intricacy of the cosmological models and astrophysical theories from which Dahlem draws his motifs. With subtle humour, the artist links the findings of natural science with aspects of cultural history and the aesthetics of everyday life and at the same time questions the suggestive power of the scientific construct of the world, whose fundamental relativity he allows to find its material equivalent in the fragility of his sculptures.
Hardly anything has challenged the human thirst for knowledge and stimulated our imagination more than the stars in the sky. The cosmos is both an object of empirical observation and a mental projection surface for us. Accordingly, our knowledge, our conception of the universe not only says something about the universe itself, but also about us humans. It is this interface at which Björn Dahlem's sculptural poetry moves and about which it deals. And although the title of the current exhibition plays with the promise that it will reveal a cosmic mystery, it is less about the actual resolution of a very concrete celestial mystery. Dahlem rather creates a parcours-like space of experience in which he gives shape to various astrononomical phenomena and theoretical models by means of the sculptural vocabulary specific to him and his practice; be it black holes, cosmic clouds or, as in the case of the main installation within the exhibition, the First Light, which scientists from the jointly responsible astronomy agencies NASA, CSA and ESA are currently tracking down with the help of the James Webb telescope and from whose detection they expect to gain more detailed information about the Big Bang and the origin of the universe in general. In doing so, Dahlem focuses in particular on the contradictory, the erratic and the hidden, as well as the voids and gaps in the context of space research, and at the same time repeatedly makes allegorical references to completely different, sometimes quite trivial moments in our lives and experiences. In this respect, the universe and its exploration function not least as proxies. After all, Dahlem's sculptural images are always also about us, the human being, in the sense of an extended (self-)portrait according to all that we know, do not know and believe we know about our extraterrestrial environment, the cosmos and its laws.
Björn Dahlem, born in Munich in 1974, studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. Since 2017, he has been a professor for sculpture, object and installation at the Bauhaus University Weimar. His work has been shown in numerous institutions and major exhibitions at home and abroad, including La Triennale di Milano, Milan (2022), Haus am Waldsee, Berlin (2020), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, South Korea (2018); ArtScience Museum, Singapore (2017); Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2016); Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2015); Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn (2014); MoCA, Taipei (2013). Currently, works by him are included in the exhibition It's a World Machine. Kepler, Art & Cosmic Bodies at the ERES Foundation in Munich.
Die Galerie Guido W. Baudach freut sich, anlässlich des Gallery Weekends Berlin 2023 ihre achte Einzelausstellung mit Björn Dahlem zu präsentierten. Unter dem Titel Something Secret about the Universe (I always wanted to tell you) zeigt der in Potsdam lebenden Künstler eine raumbezogene Installation in situ, in die verschiedene neue Skulpturen eingebettet sind.
Seit den späten 1990er Jahren erforscht Björn Dahlem in seinen Arbeiten den Zusammenhang von ästhetischer Bildwelt und wissenschaftlichen Weltbildern. Seine Installationen, Skulpturen und Objekte bestehen dabei vorwiegend aus einfachen Materialien, die Dahlem unter gezielter Einarbeitung ausgewählter objets trouvés in präzise durchkomponierte und sichtlich handgefertigte Formgebungen verwandelt. Die strukturelle Vielschichtigkeit der Arbeiten entspricht der Komplexität der kosmologischen Modelle und astrophysikalischen Theorien, denen Dahlem seine Motive entlehnt. Mit feinsinnigem Humor verknüpft der Künstler die Erkenntnisse der Naturwissenschaft mit Aspekten der Kulturgeschichte und der Ästhetik des Alltags und hinterfragt gleichzeitig die suggestive Kraft des wissenschaftlichen Konstrukts von Welt, dessen prinzipielle Relativität er in der Fragilität seiner Skulpturen ihr materielles Äquivalent finden lässt.
Kaum etwas hat den menschlichen Erkenntnisdrang seit jeher mehr herausgefordert und unsere Fantasie stärker angeregt als die Sterne am Himmel. Der Kosmos ist uns Gegenstand empirischer Beobachtung und gedankliche Projektionsfläche in einem. Dementsprechend sagt unser Wissen, unsere Vorstellung vom Universum nicht allein etwas über dieses selber aus, sondern auch über uns Menschen. Es ist diese Schnittstelle, an der sich die plastische Poesie von Björn Dahlem bewegt und von der sie handelt. Und wenngleich der Titel der aktuellen Ausstellung mit dem Versprechen spielt, dass diese ein kosmisches Geheimnis lüften werde, so geht es hier doch weniger um die tatsächliche Auflösung eines konkreten Himmelsrätsels. Vielmehr schafft Dahlem einen parcoursartigen Erfahrungsraum, in welchem er verschiedene astronomische Erscheinungen und Theoriemodelle mittels des für ihn und seine Praxis spezifischen bildhauerischen Vokabulars Gestalt werden lässt; seien es Schwarze Löcher, kosmische Wolken oder, wie bei der zentralen Installation innerhalb der Ausstellung, das Erste Licht, welchem Wissenschaftler der gemeinschaftlich verantwortlichen Astronomiebehörden NASA, CSA und ESA mit Hilfe des James-Webb-Teleskops aktuell auf der Spur sind und von dessen Erfassung sie sich näheren Aufschluß über den Urknall und die Entstehung des Universums allgemein erwarten. Dabei nimmt Dahlem insbesondere das Widersprüchliche, Erratische und Verborgene sowie die Leerstellen und Lücken im Kontext der Weltraumforschung in den Fokus und stellt zugleich immer wieder allegorische Bezüge zu vollkommen anders gearteten, teils durchaus trivialen Momenten unseres Lebens und Erlebens her. Insofern fungieren das Universum und dessen Erforschung hier nicht zuletzt als Stellvertreter, handeln Dahlems skulpturale Bilder doch stets auch von uns, dem Menschen, im Sinne eines erweiterten (Selbst-)Porträts nach Maßgabe all dessen, was wir über unsere extraterrestrische Umgebung, den Kosmos und seine Gesetzmäßigkeiten, wissen, nicht wissen und zu wissen glauben.
Björn Dahlem, geboren 1974 in München, hat an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf studiert. Seit 2017 ist er Professor für Skulptur, Objekt und Installation an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Institutionen und Großausstellungen im In- und Ausland gezeigt, u.a. La Triennale di Milano, Mailand (2022), Haus am Waldsee, Berlin (2020), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Süd-Korea (2018); ArtScience Museum, Singapur (2017); Mori Art Museum, Tokio (2016); Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2015); Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn (2014); MoCA, Taipeh (2013). Derzeit sind Arbeiten von ihm in der Ausstellung It’s a World Machine. Kepler, Kunst & Kosmische Körper in der ERES-Stiftung in München zu sehen.
